Matthias S. Krüger was born in Rottweil in 1980. Composition studies with York Höller, Frédéric Durieux, Georg Friedrich Haas and Eric Oña, conducting studies with Wojciech Rajski and piano studies with Klaus Oldemeyer in Cologne, Paris (CNSMDP, IRCAM), Frankfurt/M. and Basel. Numerous master classes for conducting and composition, including the 2011 session de composition “Voix Nouvelles” at the Fondation Royaumont with Brian Ferneyhough, Mark André and Hèctor Parra.

From 2007 to 2010, he taught electroacoustic composition and conducting at the HfMDK Frankfurt/M. in 2010/11, he was a guest lecturer for contemporary music at the University of Art in Graz.

Scholarships from the German National Academic Foundation, the Heinrich Strobel Foundation (SWR), the Mozart Foundation Frankfurt/M. and the DAAD. He has received composition prizes such as the Darmstadt Summer Course scholarship prize in 2002, the Mönchengladbach Ensemble Prize in 2003 and the Rottweil City Culture Prize in 2003, the 1st composition prize at the Krefeld New Music Days in 2013 and was a prizewinner at the Karlsruhe Composition Competition in 2014. Invitations to the 7th Young Talent Forum of the Ensemble Modern 2004 and to the Tremplin 2006/07 Ensemble Intercontemporain and IRCAM.

He worked among others with Susanna Mälkki, Hille Perl, Sarah Wegener, Christian Dierstein, Pascal Gallois, Jürg Henneberger, Johannes Kalitzke, Stephan Schmidt, Johannes Schwarz, Mike Svoboda, Martin Tchiba, Peter Veale, Bernhard Wambach and Marcus Weiss, the Ensemble Intercontemporain, Ensemble Modern, Ensemble Phoenix Basel, Ensemble Reconsil Vienna, Eunoia Ensemble, Lebanese Philharmonic Orchestra, Les cris de Paris, the musikFabrik NRW , the Orlando di Lasso Ensemble, the Polish Chamber Philharmonic, the RSO Stuttgart and the Tehran Symphony Orchestra.

Matthias S. Krüger’s compositions have been published by BabelScores Paris and Simon Verlag Berlin since 2011.

His composition focuses on exploring new tonalities and harmonic potentials. Sound spectra and overtones form an essential basis for this, which are established or contextualized in different ways. New harmonious processes and worlds emerge, in which microtonality is consistently included.

Matthias S. Krüger lives as a freelance musician with his wife and son in Lörrach near Basel in southern Baden.
